What is heart health?

Heart health refers to the condition of the heart and cardiovascular system. A healthy heart is able to pump enough blood and oxygen throughout the body to supply all the organs and tissues with the nutrients they need. Poor heart health can lead to various heart diseases, such as coronary artery disease, heart attack, arrhythmias and heart failure.

There are several factors that can contribute to heart health. Eating a balanced diet, getting regular physical activity, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, and reducing stress can help reduce the risk of heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels can also contribute to heart health.

It is important to have regular health checks and see a doctor if you develop symptoms of heart disease. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle and taking care of your heart health, you can reduce your risk of heart disease and live a long, healthy life.

How to check heart health?

There are several ways to assess heart health. Here are some common investigation methods:

Blood pressure measurement:

A sphygmomanometer is a medical instrument used to measure a patient's blood pressure. It consists of an inflatable cuff, a manometer (a device used to measure pressure) and a stethoscope or electronic gauge.

There are two types of blood pressure monitors: manual and automatic.

The manual blood pressure measurement

With a manual blood pressure monitor, the cuff is inflated by hand while taking blood pressure by listening to sounds with a stethoscope.

The automatic blood pressure measurement

With an automatic blood pressure monitor, the cuff is inflated automatically and the blood pressure is displayed electronically. These are particularly suitable for home use, as little prior knowledge is required.

To measure blood pressure, the cuff is placed around the upper arm and inflated until blood flow in the artery is completely blocked. Then the pressure in the cuff is slowly released and the doctor or nurse measures the blood pressure by listening to the sounds or reading the values on the electronic display.

Blood pressure monitors can come in a variety of sizes and styles to meet different needs and requirements. It is important to measure blood pressure regularly to avoid health problems related to high blood pressure. A doctor or healthcare professional can help you choose the right blood pressure monitor and show you how to use it properly.

In addition to the classic automatic blood pressure monitors, the MindTecStore also offers a blood pressure monitor which enables automatic measurements while you sleep. The Omron Nightview.
The MindTecStore also offers blood pressure monitors that are linked to an ECG. Here blood pressure and ECG can be measured in one. The devices are suitable for home use and for medical practices.

Electrocardiogram (ECG):

This is a non-invasive testing method that uses electrodes placed on the skin to measure electrical activity in the heart. An ECG can provide indications of heart diseases such as arrhythmias, heart muscle enlargement or damage to the heart muscle.

Stress ECG:

This is a variant of the ECG in which additional measurements are taken during physical exertion (e.g. treadmill test). In this way you can observe the heart under stress and see whether it is reacting correctly to stress.

Mobile ECGs:

Mobile ECGs (electrocardiograms) are portable devices that allow users to monitor and record their heart activity while moving about in everyday life. These devices can come in the form of wristwatches, small handheld devices, smartwatches or fitness trackers, and are usually easy to use.
Most portable ECGs use electrophysiology sensors that are placed on the skin of the chest and record electrical signals from the heart. Some mobile ECGs can also be connected to an app or computer to transmit the recorded data to a doctor or healthcare professional.

Mobile ECGs can be useful to detect and record signs of arrhythmias or other heart conditions. They can also help monitor heart health for people who already have or are at high risk of heart disease.
However, it is important to note that mobile ECGs cannot provide a diagnosis and are not a substitute for professional medical evaluation. If you have concerns or questions about your heart health, consult a doctor or healthcare professional.

Other complex heart health examinations:

In addition to the 2 classic heart examinations (ECG and blood pressure), there are other complex heart health examination options:

Echocardiography:

This is a non-invasive testing method that uses sound waves to visualize the heart and surrounding blood vessels. This can indicate heart conditions such as thickening of the heart walls, changes in the heart valves or heart failure.

The heart catheter examination:

This is an invasive testing method in which a catheter is inserted through an artery into the heart to obtain images of the heart and surrounding blood vessels. This method can provide clues about heart disease that other tests cannot detect.
It is important to have regular health checks and to see a doctor if you develop symptoms of heart disease. Your doctor can recommend the most appropriate examination method for your specific situation.
